Decapolice: Crime-Fighting Detective RPG By The Professor Layton Devs [VIDEO]

And in this case, the game is not made for all the usual platforms either (something of a trend today, as is all capping of game and studio names).

Decapolice is a mystery detective story with a virtual world investigation. It will be a crime RPG from Level 5, known for the Professor Layton games. The main character is called Harvard and is a rookie detective. He hunts criminals in a vast, open-world, crime-ridden city, traveling back and forth between physical and virtual reality. It’s a detective story full of mystery, with investigations taking place in virtual space.

The Japanese studio (which also includes the formerly independent Comcept, created by Keiji Inafune, who rose through the ranks at Capcom but is best known as one of the leading developers of the Mega Man games) has named the virtual world. It would be Decasim, a virtual world created from a perfect replica of reality. It will be more than a simulation because it will be a complete replica of a real city. A forbidden place where memories of all past crimes lie dormant. However, it’s here that Harvard (who is about to be thrown into the deep end with his first major assignment) must go because the “clues” he finds in Decasim could help him unravel the mysteries of the real world.

There are a few examples of Level 5 outside the Professor Layton IP, such as the Yo-kai Watch series, the Ni no Kuni games, and the work with Square Enix on Dragon Quest IX (for Nintendo DS), as well as the PSP Jeanne D’Arc, which was not released in Europe (and was published by Sony in Japan and North America). So the studio is not a new team, and they are worth keeping an eye on even if they are not as well known in the West as they are at home.

The target platforms for Decapolice are unusual, but knowing the Japanese market, it’s not surprising that it will be released worldwide for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch sometime this year. So no word on Xbox or PC versions…
