MOVIE NEWS – The Xbox boss seems to be trying to bribe Sony into not opposing Activision Blizzard King’s acquisition (PlayStation is the most prominent opponent of Microsoft’s $68.7 billion takeover of the Call of Duty publisher).
Compared to The Last of Us, Halo took a different direction last year (and that series was probably talked about a lot because Master Chief lost his virginity in it…), so it can be argued that Sony and Microsoft have been going in opposite directions in the TV adaptation. Microsoft has already agreed to give Halo a second season on Paramount Plus, and Phil Spencer has already said they’re going to pull a few tricks from The Last of Us…
While the reception to The Last of Us has been almost exclusively positive, fans heavily criticized Halo. The press has been less than optimistic about the series, which a relatively large number of people has watched compared to the Paramount Plus subscriber base (and Halo Infinite’s weaker-than-expected results and post-release support didn’t help). Spencer told IGN that The Last of Us adaptation “setting an incredibly high bar. Should we all aspire to reach that same bar with our television work? Absolutely. I could say the same thing in video games.” He says Neil Druckman has played a significant role in its success, calling the series on HBO fantastic and inspiring Microsoft to do its best. He would like to see that in the TV and gaming vision around Halo.
Halo season 2 was confirmed before its launch last March, but it’s not yet known when it will be shown. The first season is among Paramount’s best shows, ahead of 1883 and Yellowstone. Too much of the lore has changed from the games, and because of that, it’s being treated as another Halo, e.g., Master Chief shows his face more than not, and many things are unclear in the story.
From here, it will be hard to beat Naughty Dog’s work.
