Meta, not in a strong position lately, is about to launch a subscription service.
Or, more accurately, one more, as Twitter has already been copied by Mark Zuckerberg when he launched a monthly subscription service on Facebook, which offers the same “better care” as Twitter Blue on the Elon Musk-owned social platform. (We’ve covered both in more detail.) Meta’s financial situation is not rosy, so it’s no wonder that, besides Facebook subscriptions, a service could be launched around Quest VR headsets that would be the local equivalent of Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass.
On Twitter, one user found references to a Quest Pass subscription service in the Meta Quest app for Android. Another found the same in the iOS version, so it can’t be a coincidence, as Meta has hidden plans for both mobile operating systems that have yet to be confirmed by the company. “Get up to two new apps or games every month with [Project Apollo]. Log in monthly to redeem your apps and grow your library with the most exciting VR titles. Redeem your apps by the end of the month, and keep your apps as long as you are subscribed,” the description says.
It’s a one-to-one definition for PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass, and it’s understandable why Meta would plan something like it. After all, last week, the company said that 20 million Quest headsets had been sold since its 2019 release, and that’s how we heard that Meta Quest 3 would hit stores sometime this year. It’ll be twice as thin as model 2. There will also be a significant performance boost (at least twice the power), but the price will be slightly higher. They are asking $400 for the Meta Quest 2, so the Quest 3 could be available for $450.
Of course, that would also be cheaper than PlayStation VR2…
