Originally it was going to be four games, but the publisher may have changed its mind and is only getting rid of three…
In a statement, Electronic Arts has announced that it will stop selling four of its games from April 28: “Starting April 28, 2023, Battlefield 1943, Battlefield: Bad Company 1 and 2, and Mirror’s Edge will be removed from digital storefronts, and you will no longer be able to purchase them. This is in preparation for the retirement of the online services for these titles, which will happen on December 8, 2023. For Bad Company 1 and 2, and Mirror’s Edge, you can continue playing them and use their respective offline features, such as the single-player campaign. You can also read our FAQ and Service Updates for further information on the retirement of online services.”
The publisher then updated this announcement, as Mirror’s Edge is NOT affected. So only the three Battlefield games will be leaving the platforms, and regarding the two Bad Company titles, you can at least play through the story. Due to its online focus, Battlefield 1943 will be discontinued on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It brings up the idea of game preservation, which Electronic Arts has wholly ignored. Who remembers Darkspore? After it disappeared, it became unaccessible and unplayable…
Battlefield 1943 saw the island of Wake explored on console (and a PC port was planned but canceled). Battlefield: Bad Company was the premiere of the Frostbite engine that the franchise has used ever since, but the game, released in June 2008, was again only available on PS3 and X360. A sequel was released in 2010, and by then, the game running on the then ‘1.5’ Frostbite engine, also had a PC port.
So Mirror’s Edge (not the 2016 one!) was saved, but Battlefield 1943, Battlefield: Bad Company, and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 were not. There’s still a month to buy them, mainly on the Microsoft Store and PlayStation Store, and then on December 8, the online features say goodbye.
