MOVIE NEWS – In Shazam! Fury of the Gods, Gal Gadot returns as Wonder Woman to resurrect Billy Batson/Shazam from the dead. However, some fans do not believe that the actress actually participated in the filming and claim that her face was superimposed on another actress’s body using a Gal Gadot deepfake technology. David F. Sandberg, the director, however, firmly rejects this accusation.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods received mixed reviews from the audience and critics. A new accusation also emerged against the film, which Sandberg quickly responded to. In a Twitter post, in which he shared a video of himself directing the cameo scene remotely, Sandberg said that no deepfake was used. The video shows Gal Gadot being instructed by the director remotely. Sandberg explained that he could not travel to London to direct the scene in person, and Gadot could not come to Atlanta for filming. He also clarified that Gadot’s body double was used to figure out what shots were needed from Gadot, and to shoot those scenes in Billy’s dream where Gadot’s face is not visible.
“There is no Gal Gadot deepfake in it,”
Sandberg said. “When you see Gal, it’s 100% her.”
Sandberg also said that this method is not new. “We did this in the first Shazam! with Superman,” he wrote in another Twitter post. “We first shot it with a body double, then we got the necessary shots from Cavill. Only this last part never happened in the first Shazam!” Sandberg mentioned that Superman’s cameo in the first Shazam! is headless because he could not convince Cavill to appear with his face in the film. Since Wonder Woman’s dream scene in Shazam! Fury of the Gods was shot similarly to Superman’s in the first film, it was easy for fans to think that this would be the only time they would see the Amazon warrior. For those fans who were not spoiled by Gadot’s cameo, it was a pleasant surprise to see her at the film’s end.
Unfortunately, this may be the last time Gadot plays Wonder Woman and Levi plays Shazam. Although a third Shazam! film has been mentioned, and Patty Jenkins has already worked on a third Wonder Woman film, both films are questionable. Patty Jenkins is no longer working on Wonder Woman 3. Due to the restructuring of the DC Universe, James Gunn and Peter Safran, the new DC Studios leaders, are unsure if Gadot wants to continue her role in the new DC Universe.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods is now playing in theaters nationwide.
