Sam Barlow is the former writer and designer of two franchise installments, and he thinks it’s a bad idea that Konami has hired Bloober Team to remake its iconic game.
Barlow is also known for several other games, having written and directed Her Story, Telling Lies, and Immortality. His Silent Hill work is based around Silent Hill Origins and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. In an interview with PCGamesN, Barlow was not impressed that the Bloober Team, known for Blair Witch, Observer, The Medium, and Layers of Fear, had been given such a big task: “Personally, I’m less excited about playing a remaster. It’s also like the biggest poisoned chalice in video games, doing a remaster of Silent Hill 2. Good luck to them because I don’t know how you can do that without upsetting people.” He said remaster, but it’s more than that.
Barlow was more upbeat about Konami’s other already announced Silent Hill projects: “The version of Silent Hill that I would love – which it sounds like they’re pushing – is that ‘we use this as a platform to have a range of interesting psychological horror games,’ and actually, can we see a breadth of gameplay? Twilight Zone and those anthologies give you a sense of what you’re getting yourself in for, but you’re also excited to see the different ways they can be explored.”
Last week, we wrote that the Silent Hill 2 Remake development, running on Unreal Engine 5, was almost complete. It will use an over-the-shoulder camera position (a la Resident Evil 4 Remake), and some of the locations and combat systems will be redesigned by the Bloober Team. Also in the works are Silent Hill Townfall (NoCode; to be published by Annapurna Interactive), Silent Hill f (NeoBards; 1960s Japan with a beautiful but scary world), and Silent Hill: Ascension (an interactive streaming series where the audience will influence the canon of the franchise).
Silent Hill 2 Remake will be available for PlayStation 5 and PC, with no release date known.
