MOVIE NEWS – Harrison Ford returns for the fifth and final time as the famous archaeologist in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which hits theaters in the summer of 2023. The film promises an exciting story and a great cast, but will it close the series?

The Indiana Jones films have been favorites of generations since they debuted in 1981 with Raiders of the Lost Ark. The adventure films directed by Steven Spielberg and created by George Lucas made Harrison Ford a world star, who played the hero who solved archaeological mysteries and defeated the Nazis four times. The latest installment, 2008’s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, was not as successful as the previous ones, but fans still waited for another sequel.

After Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, they announced that a fifth Indiana Jones film was in the works, which was originally scheduled to be released in 2019. However, due to multiple rewrites and Spielberg’s resignation, the project was delayed several times. Finally, James Mangold (Logan, Ford v Ferrari) took over as director, and filming began in June 2021 in England, Scotland, Italy and Morocco.

The plot of the film is still kept secret, but it is known that it takes place in 1969, when the space race is also going on. Alongside Harrison Ford, John Rhys-Davies returns as Sallah, who helped Indy in the first and third parts. New faces include Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), Antonio Banderas (The Mask of Zorro), Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale), Thomas Kretschmann (The Pianist), Toby Jones (The Winter Soldier) and Boyd Holbrook (Nemesis).

The title of the film was also revealed only recently: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. This may suggest that Indy has to find an ancient device and prevent it from falling into the wrong hands. But will this be his last adventure? Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said they don’t want to replace Harrison Ford, and that this will be the last chapter in Indy’s story. Mangold also said he wanted to give a worthy ending to the legendary character. But that doesn’t mean it’s completely over for the franchise: maybe new characters will take over the baton, or the series will continue on a different timeline.

One thing is certain: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will attract a lot of interest from viewers who will be able to see it in theaters on June 30, 2023.
