MOVIE NEWS – The star of the Sonic the Hedgehog movies, Ben Schwartz would like Jim Carrey to reprise his role as the evil Dr. Robotnik in the planned third installment. The actor spoke to The Hollywood Reporter at the screening of the horror-comedy Renfield about Sonic 3.
Schwartz said that Carrey previously hinted in interviews that he would retire from acting and was not sure if he would return to the Sonic franchise. The actor hopes that Carrey and the other actors will participate in the three-part sequel.
“I know that Jim Carrey gave some interviews and he’s not sure if he’s coming back. My hope is that we all come back and we all do another one. This is my hope of all hopes because I love this franchise so much and I love the fans and I love everything we’ve made. So my hope is that we all do this third one and it will be the best time” – Schwartz said.
Carrey announced last year that he would retire from acting after Sonic 2. The two-time Oscar-winning actor debuted as Dr. Robotnik in the first Sonic movie, who is a mad scientist hired by the government to investigate Sonic’s existence on Earth, but turns out to be keen to use the blue hedgehog’s power to take over the world.
In Sonic 2, Robotnik reappears from another dimension and teams up with another villain, Knuckles (Idris Elba), to steal Sonic’s rings. The film was a huge success with critics and audiences alike.
Sonic 3 is scheduled for release in 2024. The film’s producers Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher said they are trying to convince Carrey to return as Robotnik. If they fail to persuade him, they do not want to recast Robotnik.
