MOVIE NEWS – Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director James Mangold is already giving us a sneak preview of the film’s opening scene. It will be a 25-minute action sequence featuring a “rejuvenated” Harrison Ford.
Director James Mangold talks about the 25-minute opening scene of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Harrison Ford first donned the iconic Indy hat in the 1981 film Raiders of the Lost Ark. He went on to play the character three more times before seemingly hanging up the whip for good after 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. But against all the odds, Ford’s Indiana Jones will return for one more adventure in the fifth Indy film, which opens this summer. The movie employs the popular de-ageing technology in a flashback scene in which a World War II-era Jones once again fights the Nazis.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny does indeed see a new man take the reins after the departure of director Steven Spielberg, but newcomer Mangold knows what makes an excellent Indy movie work, as he pointed out in his recent comments recalling the film’s classic opening scene.
Speaking to Total Film (via GamesRadar), Mangold talked about how anti-ageing technology has been used to shave decades off the star Ford. The director also spoke about how his ease with the new technology allowed him to create an opening action sequence that gives an old-fashioned Indiana Jones feel. This is important because the film then moves to a later era and a different Jones. Here’s what Mangold had to say:
“It was an incredible technology, and, in many ways, I just didn’t think about it. I just focused on shooting what’s [approximately] a 25-minute opening extravaganza that was my chance to just let it rip. The goal was to give the audience a full-bodied taste of what they missed so much. Because then when the movie lands in 1969, they’re going to have to make an adjustment to what it is now, which is different from what it was..”
The original Raiders of the Lost Ark is memorable for many things, but arguably the most iconic imagery comes from the opening scene, in which Jones raids a flooded South American tomb.
His goal is to get his hands on a shiny gold idol, but more importantly, it’s a great intro to the character. The first sequel in 1984, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, continued the series’ tradition of James Bond-like opening scenes. With another wild sequence. Kate Capshaw’s musical number, a mad slapstick skirmish. Then a car chase to the airport with Ke Huy Quan’s Short Round at the wheel. And The Last Crusader’s flashback opening scene is unforgettable.
