The fan demake isn’t perfect (there’s room for improvement), but it brings one of the games made for the console that played a role in creating Sony’s PlayStation to a more popular platform.
To quickly explain: in 1989, Ken Kutaragi created a sound chip for the Super Famicom (SNES) while working at Sony. The SPC700 was being made secretly, but Kutaragi’s work was discovered. Sony management was furious, but CEO Norio Ohga let the job finish. Games were seen as a fad within the company, but Kutaragi convinced Ohga to get Sony to create a CD-ROM add-on for the Super Famicom. It gave rise to the Nintendo Play Station, but the big N signed a deal with Philips. Sony made the PS1 in revenge, and Philips somehow managed to license Mario and The Legend of Zelda for its CD-i console…
One of those games was Zelda’s Adventure, which was ported to the Game Boy. We’ve seen several fan demakes (Bloodborne, Elden Ring, Resident Evil 4 Remake, Dead Space Remake…). However, the top-down-view adventure (which followed the first The Legend of Zelda’s style; the other two Zelda CDs adopted the sidescrolling view of the sequel) has been retained. An indie developer, John Lay, created the demake. The Irish gentleman followed the original’s example, and instead of Link, we control Zelda (after all, our hero has been kidnapped by Ganon).
Lay said the concept of Zelda’s Adventure was so interesting that he thought it would be fun on a handheld platform. He lifted the visual style of Link’s Awakening and features from the Zelda Oracle games for the demake, which he created at GB Studio. In the video embedded below, you can see the CD-i original and the GB demake side by side. There’s not much loading time, and it’s playable from a browser, so you don’t even have to download it if you don’t want to (or if you’re trying it on someone else’s machine).
The demake can be found here. If you like Link’s Awakening, it is worth a try.
