The Polish studio is admittedly looking to develop horror games that appeal to a broader audience, so from now on, the team will focus on mass horror…
Piotr Babieno, CEO of Bloober Team, currently working on the Silent Hill 2 Remake, confirmed to Engadget that the Unreal Engine 5 game Layers of Fear (which has still the same name as the first in the series, but the 2023 title is much more than that in terms of content…) was the last act in their psychological horror genre. From now on, they will strive to develop horror games that appeal to a broader audience.
This definition means that they will not focus on atmosphere with a medium budget and walking simulator gameplay but will aim to develop player-driven, action-oriented games. According to Babieno, they have previously focused on the quality of the story, atmosphere, and audiovisuals (graphics + music), but not much attention has been paid to the gameplay mechanics. After Bloober Team evolves to version 3.0 (seriously, the studio’s CEO brought up 3.0…), Silent Hill 2 Remake will be their first new attempt. Larger games with more gameplay mechanics are in the works, but that means that James Sunderland’s adventure will also depart from the perfection Konami achieved in 2001’s original Silent Hill 2…
It is worth being skeptical about Babieno’s statement. Silent Hill 2 was perfect because it had such a mood and environment, and it portrayed James’s suffering so well. But games that require more presence in the gameplay, such as the stealth sections of Observer (with automatic failure if you make a mistake once!), have been exceedingly annoying from the studio. If the same trend continues, their previously forgettable games (e.g., Blair Witch) won’t look so much worse than the new ones, i.e., there won’t be any significant improvement…
Silent Hill 2 Remake has no release date yet. It’s coming to PlayStation 5 and PC, and Babieno’s statement makes us worry that the remake won’t be on the same level as the original and will end up being a huge disappointment…
