Peter Molyneux Is At It Again: Overhyping A PC/Console Project?

It’s as if we’ve gone back in time 17-18 years because what Peter Molyneux said about a project in the making had so much praise as if we were in 2005 or so…

Peter Molyneux had created a few franchises (Populous, Syndicate, Fable…), but as his time at Microsoft and Lionhead Studios drew to a close, he started promising the skies from the stars. For example, there’s the never-realized Project Milo Kinect life simulator, but he also made some promises about Fable that weren’t in the games that were eventually released. He then set up his studio, 22cans, which worked on several mobile games (Curiosity: What’s Inside the Cube?, Godus), but these were either left unfinished or released in disappointing states.

But Molyneux hasn’t given up: in an interview with GameReactor, he admitted that it would annoy his fans too much if he hyped his next project, and yet he seems to have done just that. 22cans’ next project will not be a mobile game but a PC console game, and he cited Molyneux’s previous games (Fable, Dungeon Keeper, Black & White) as a point of comparison, but this one will have “a mechanic that hasn’t been seen in any other game”… we’ve gone back in time.

“I think we have stumbled […] on a mechanic that has never been seen in a game before. I feel like we are exploiting that mechanic in a world and an environment that may be familiar to people. And because it is in a familiar environment, it’ll be fresher. And a lot of this is mystical because I’m trying to avoid telling you what it’s like. It will be like a Fable, Black & White, Dungeon Keeper experience. We’ve almost […] decided to make it a PC/console title rather than being mobile. I’m not saying that we’ll never do it on mobile, but we’re leading on PC and console, mainly because we need the power,” Molyneux said.

The games are of different genres, so it’s an ambitious project that Molyneux will be working on as a programmer again after 22 years (he last did so on 2001’s Black & White). But if he goes over the top again, we’ll laugh in agony.

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
