Capcom has responded to a shareholder’s question, giving fans some hope as to whether a Resident Evil Code: Veronica remake is possible.
Capcom has given Resident Evil fans new hope that Resident Evil Code: Veronica could be getting a remake sometime down the line. Although not a numbered entry in the long-running survival-horror franchise, Resident Evil Code: Veronica is a game of great historical importance and was developed as a true successor to Resident Evil 2. Despite this, Capcom has seemingly left Code: Veronica out of its lineup of Resident Evil upgrades.
The first Resident Evil remake was released in 2002, when Capcom rebuilt the original Resident Evil from the ground up with significantly improved graphics and new gameplay features. Nearly two decades later, Capcom followed up with the hugely successful remake of Resident Evil 2, which spawned remakes of Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4. Chronologically, Code: Veronica takes place before Resident Evil 4, so some fans of the franchise were disappointed when the RE4 remake was announced before the Code: Veronica remake.
While Capcom still hasn’t committed to a Code: Veronica remake, it seems like the company hasn’t ruled it out. Capcom was recently asked by a shareholder about making remakes only for the numbered parts of the series. Capcom responded with a vague answer saying that they are “in talks to expand the series in the future so that it can be enjoyed by a wide audience”. This is far from confirmation that a Code: Veronica remake is in development, but it does mean that Capcom is at least open to the possibility, giving Resident Evil fans new hope that it could happen sometime down the line. .
If Capcom does decide to remake Code: Veronica, such a project will likely be years away. According to the latest rumors, the next Resident Evil game will be Resident Evil 9 and not a remake. This is good news for Resident Evil fans who prefer completely original adventures over remakes, but bad news for those who want to relive Code: Veronica with improved graphics and modern quality of life features.
Some fans believe that Capcom will continue to ignore it with their remakes of Code: Veronica and instead make a remake of Resident Evil 5 instead. This would make some sense since Resident Evil 5’s story follows the Wesker threads left behind by RE4, but it would be a shame since Code: Veronica is the game that brought Wesker back.
While Code: Veronica’s revamp may never happen, at least the game is playable on modern platforms. Code: Veronica can also be played on the latest Xbox consoles, and PS Plus Premium subscribers can also play the game on PS5.
The HD version of Resident Evil Code: Veronica is available on PS3 and Xbox 360.
