Microsoft is losing one of its best-known and best-loved faces: Larry Hryb, aka Major Nelson, who was Xbox’s community director for more than 15 years, has announced he is leaving the company. What could be behind this unexpected decision and what will happen to him in the future?
Larry Hryb was one of the few people at Microsoft since the launch of the first generation Xbox, and over the years he has helped, informed and entertained many gamers through his blog, podcasts and videos. It was he who introduced new consoles, games and services, and it was he who relayed fan feedback and requests to developers. It’s no coincidence that he was seen by many as the face and voice of Xbox.
But now he has decided it is time to move on and seek new challenges. He announced this in a long farewell post on his blog, thanking everyone for their support and love over the decades. He also revealed that he would not be leaving the games industry completely, but would continue in a new position somewhere else. However, he has not yet revealed the details.
The announcement shocked the Xbox community, who flooded Hryb with messages and comments. Many expressed their regret and gratitude for him, while others wondered who would replace him. On behalf of Microsoft, Xbox chief Phil Spencer was the first to respond, thanking Hryb for his work and friendship and wishing him well on his new journey.
Hryb’s last day at Microsoft will be 31 January. We’ll see him in a few more videos and podcasts before then, but after that he’ll be a memory. Whatever his next move, we’re sure many gamers will continue to follow him. Thanks for everything, Major Nelson!
