MOVIE NEWS – Sixties pop culture icon Jane Birkin has died of leukemia. The actress and singer was born in London, but became world famous in Paris with her relationship with Serge Gainsbourg and her joint works.
Jane Birkin was born on December 14, 1946 in London, the child of a sea captain and an actress. He participated in the London pop culture of the sixties at a young age and made his debut in the film world at the age of 17. In 1968, during the filming of Alain Delon’s film The Pool, he traveled to Paris, where he met Serge Gainsbourg, who became his musical and romantic partner. Together they made the famous-infamous song Je t’aime… moi non plus, which caused a scandal because of the sexual sounds. Birkin and Gainsbourg have appeared together in several films, such as Slogan or The Story of Melody Nelson. The couple were together for 13 years and had a daughter, Charlotte Gainsbourg, who also became an actress and singer.
However, Birkin worked not only with Gainsbourg, but also with other musicians such as John Barry, Brian Eno or Goran Bregovic. He developed his own style, combining French chanson, English pop and world music. He has released more than 20 albums, the last of which was 2018’s Oh! Pardon tu dormais…
Her career as an actress was also successful, she played in more than 70 films with different directors such as Jacques Rivette, Agnès Varda or Michelangelo Antonioni. We last saw him in 2020 in the short film La femme et le TGV. Birkin was popular not only in France, but also in England and America. She has won several awards, such as the Best Actress award at the Venice Film Festival in 1985 and the OBE (Order of the British Empire) in 2001.
