Sony’s already announced (and shown) handheld might be moddable, as Google’s operating system is seen on the device, which doesn’t seem more than a DualSense controller with a display…
The Project Q has surfaced on the Imgur photo-sharing site and then on Reddit, and the leak gives us a glimpse of what hardware awaits us when we take off the display. We’ve learned that the device is running Android OS, which hasn’t been made clear (Sony is being secretive), as the “blue company” hasn’t said much so far except that it can be used for Remote Play. Still, you’ll need a PlayStation 5 to use it: “Project Q is a dedicated device launching later this year that enables you to play any compatible game installed on your PlayStation 5 using Remote Play over Wi-Fi. With a vibrant 8-inch LCD screen capable of up to 1080p resolution at 60fps, the device delivers crisp visuals and smooth gameplay streamed from your PS5 when you’re away from your TV,” says the official, not very informative overview.
However, if Sony does use Android, it would be a big surprise because the PlayStation Vita, Sony’s last attempt at handheld gaming, had a unique operating system. Google’s software, on the other hand, could open the door for modders to create a full-fledged cloud platform, as GeForce Now, Shadow, Boosteroid, Amazon Luna, and Xbox Cloud Gaming might work on Project Q, and Sony could then unofficially launch a rival to the Logitech G Cloud or the Abxylute.
However, we’ve previously reported that the Project Q’s battery only lasts around four hours, which is ridiculous if the rumors are true. Still, seeing the capacity of the DualSense Edge, or even the regular DualSense, we’re sadly led to believe it. The situation isn’t helped by the fact that adaptive triggers and haptic feedback have been moved over from the DualSense.
When will Project Q be released, and how much will Sony charge? These are, unfortunately, still unanswered questions…
