There are already rumors about when Sony will launch the half-generation console… and that’s enough to make you wonder.
Tom Henderson has revealed new details about the PlayStation 5 Pro, which means that Sony will be launching a half-gen update similar to the PlayStation 4, and unlike Microsoft (who see the Xbox Series X as the successor to the Xbox One X) will be releasing a more powerful console mid-generation. The codename is Matrix-inspired, unsurprising as the PlayStation 4 was called Neo, PlayStation VR was called Morpheus… and the PlayStation 5 Pro is codenamed Trinity!
Trinity has been in development since the beginning of 2022, and the aim is for developers to receive the development kit this year (in the second half of November). Henderson expects the PlayStation 5 Pro to hit stores sometime in November 2024, giving developers a year to get to grips with the technology before launch. The new console will feature advanced ray tracing, with a performance-focused mode capable of 8K resolution and a more stable and advanced frame rate at 4K. The memory will be capable of 18000 MT/s instead of 14000 MT/s, with 30 WGP (work group processors) or 60 CU (compute units), which would also be higher than the 36 seen in the base PlayStation 5. The code name of the unique SoC designed by AMD is also known: Viola.
Due for release in November 2024, there’s a good chance that AMD’s FixelityFX Super Resolution 3 will also be supported by the PlayStation 5 Pro, which will be able to deliver a much more stable experience with its frame rate. The technology responded to Nvidia’s DLSS 3, and the company says it will use “interpolated frames” for FSR 3, set to be available on PC in “2023.” Unfortunately, Henderson has no word on pricing for the console, but he says the PlayStation 5 Slim doesn’t exist… so what about the model without a built-in Blu-ray drive?
