Using the Snowdrop engine, the game from Ubisoft Massive Entertainment appeared at San Diego Comic-Con, and Lucasfilm Games put together a panel for it at the event.
Julian Gerighty, creative director of Star Wars: Outlaws, revealed that players will have the opportunity to meet Jabba and even visit Eis Mosley, so you’ll be able to see the character’s home and take on missions from him (or even betray him, if you feel so inclined). He also provided more details about the locations and characters on the official Star Wars website.
“Fans will have to play the game to see who might show up as a part of Kay’s story. I think Jabba’s the most obvious that we’ve featured. We also wanted an iconic location, and that was, for me, Tatooine. It was a big challenge because there are so many things on Tatooine that it’s become a puzzle to put things together. But we went back to the source. We went to some of the DK visual guides and started building, “Okay, what are the most important parts, and what’s gonna make the most fun for the player to explore?” So Mos Eisley is a big part of it, but there’s also a lot of the dunes, the canyons, and things you expect. You know, we try and put together the greatest hits of Tatooine.
We talked about the singular nature of open worlds to allow the player to have agency in their experience. But there’s another part of it that I love, and that’s very Ubisoft, which is virtual tourism. And the virtual tourism in a place like Tatooine is excellent because I’ve always wondered how far the moisture farms were from Mos Eisley. I’ve always wondered how the cantina was constructed. So all of these things, we’re trying to do justice to the source material by recreating it as authentically as possible, with the help of Lucasfilm Games,” said Gerighty.
Dee Bradley Baker voices Jabba and Nix. He is well-versed in voice acting for the franchise (he was the voice of Bossk in Star Wars: Battlefront, for example), having been heard in many animated shows and films. Ubisoft has also released a new behind-the-scenes video starring Humberly González. She voices Kay, the main character in the game: “The stakes are very high for Kay’s Journey through the underworld, but she learns, she adapts, she sneaks around, and she finds herself in significant spaces with compelling people. Players are going to love Star Wars Outlaws. It’s going to be exciting. It’s very adventurous, which makes it Star Wars, so I’m very excited to share that,” the video says.
Star Wars: Outlaws is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC in 2024.
