Johnny Depp Was Very Cool as Jack Sparrow, But How Credible Was He as a Pirate? The Expert Has Spoken! [VIDEO]

CINEMA NEWS – A pirate expert analyzed the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie, which is 20 years old this year, and especially praised Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow in it.

Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl has been praised for capturing the essence of the pirates’ infamous quest for fame. Depp’s Sparrow captures the allure of pirates in the golden age of piracy, their rebellious and free-spirited lifestyle. Pirates were considered cool and sexy for seizing their own freedom. However, the film botches many historical details, such as the depiction of pirate codes and the practicality of keeping monkeys on board.

Pirates expert Izi Lawrence reviews Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and gives Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow high marks. Gore Verbinski’s 2003 first Pirates of the Caribbean film brilliantly revives the Disney film and launched a franchise that would later gross over $4.5 billion at the box office. Captain Jack Sparrow, played by Depp, the smart, swashbuckling pirate, is the key character of all the films, who gets involved in all kinds of adventures on the high seas.

Now, in a new YouTube video from History Hit, Lawrence analyzes the first Pirates of the Caribbean film for historical accuracy.

The film spoils a lot about real life pirates and other aspects of 18th century life, but Lawrence praises Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow. Check out Lawrence’s commentary on various scenes from the film below:

“No one was branded a pirate, but you know, never mind. People were branded. If you were a priest and you got arrested for something, you could be branded, but you couldn’t claim to be a priest again. [Jack Sparrow’s] line here, ‘But you’ve heard of me.’ , wonderful. That’s what you wanted as a pirate. You wanted your name to prevent people from giving up before they fought you.

“For some reason the handcuffs they put on [Captain Jack Sparrow] are obviously leg irons because there’s enough room for his hands to move, which is a weird thing.

“Now this thing about the pirate codex and the parley is pretty stupid. Yes, there are pirate codexes, there are many pirate codexes. Every pirate ship has its own code. The pirate codex is real, but it’s this kind of universal pirate brotherhood where everyone shares the same follows the rules – not real.

“[Captain Barbossa] has a monkey there. The French, I think, brought a lot of monkeys to the Caribbean because they used to be very fashionable pets… But monkeys need a lot of water, so it’s not a good idea to keeping them on ships. You’re much better off with a parrot.

“Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow as a kind of cool rock star is a hit, because pirates were seen by the public as incredibly cool and sexy. I think the golden age of piracy was really between 1715 and 1722 or something like that. General history of pirates 1724 appeared in , so everyone was talking about pirates.

“They were considered very cool. They broke all the rules. They were outlaws who acted like lords. Lots of people wanted to be pirates. They lived a life that no one dared to live, and they literally took their freedom, and they just went, went.

“You were no longer servants of a government or money-making companies, and you weren’t servants of some kind of general clumsiness of being a commoner. When you were a pirate, you basically said, ‘Okay, I’m not going to live long.’ I’m going to have a short, damn short life, and I’m going to have a very good life.”

Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow is crucial in Pirates of the Caribbean

Initially, they were skeptical that the movie about the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction at Walt Disney World would be a success. However, when the film was released, Depp’s performance as Jack Sparrow was one of the main highlights. He brought humor to the world and was instantly a pirate worth rooting for.

To offset the peculiarities of Depp’s performance, Keira Knightley’s Elizabeth Swann and Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner also present themselves as very smart characters in the first Pirates of the Caribbean film. The inclusion of these two more down-to-earth characters gives the film an emotional center that continues to play out and develop in the sequels Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.

Unfortunately, the last two instalments of the franchise have proven that Depp’s Jack Sparrow may not be enough to continue the franchise. Lacking the emotional core of the previous films, and with stories that are less than convincing, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales fell largely flat, despite Depp’s involvement. With Disney seemingly open to renewing its working relationship with Depp after his recent legal troubles, it is possible that the new instalment in the franchise could regain what made Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl such a success.
