MOVIE NEWS – Star Wars stands in front of an unparalleled opportunity to use Abeloth, a truly terrifying villain from the Legends, as Rey’s opponent in her next film, as this opponent has already been created in the canon.
The soon to be released Star Wars film, starring Rey Skywalker, could provide an opportunity to introduce Abeloth, a frightening villain from the Legends, who could become an adversary to Rey and the new Jedi Order. Abeloth was once a mortal woman who transformed into an immortal Force entity. In the Legends, she was held captive by the Ones, but she could be released in the canonical Star Wars universe. Changes in the Force, such as the defeat of Palpatine and the union of Rey and Ben Solo, likely serve as a starting point for Abeloth’s liberation, transforming her into a terrifying enemy of the galaxy.
The upcoming Star Wars film, starring Rey Skywalker, can introduce a truly frightening villain, who has already been prepared in the established canon. After Palpatine’s resurrection in The Force Awakens and the fall of the Final Order, a new darkness will rise. Keeping this in mind, Star Wars already has a villain from the Legends who would be perfect to face Rey and the new generation of Jedi.
The new Star Wars film starring Daisy Ridley’s Rey takes place 15 years after the events of the Skywalker saga and will establish a new Jedi Order. The film, directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, has yet to reveal who or what threat could emerge to disrupt the peace reigning in the far, far away galaxy. However, the appearance of one of the most powerful villains from the Legends has already occurred in the official Star Wars canon.
But who is Abeloth, one of the most dangerous villains in Star Wars?
Abeloth, a dark and powerful entity of the Force in the Legends, not part of the canonical stories, threatens the New Republic and the Jedi Order. Abeloth, also known as the Bringer of Chaos and the Beloved Queen of the Stars, was once a mortal woman who became a corrupted immortal. Initially, Abeloth was a simple servant of the Force beings known as the Ones. In canon, the Ones first appeared in The Clone Wars animated series on the planet Mortis. The Son represented the dark side, while the Daughter represented the light. They were constantly in conflict, and it was the Father’s job to maintain balance.
In the legends, the Servant eventually became a beloved member of the Ones’ family, a Mother, who helped maintain balance between the Son and the Daughter.
Her mortal form aged, unlike her immortal family, which drove the Mother to desperation. She bathed and drank in nodes of the Force known as the Font of Power and the Pool of Knowledge, thus corrupting herself and officially becoming a Force entity, Abeloth. For her actions and corruption, the Ones imprisoned Abeloth, who tried to break out every time the balance of the Force was upset, but the Ones always defeated her and imprisoned her in a continuous cycle.
Abeloth’s Prison Was Already Featured in Solo: A Star Wars Story
In the Legends, Abeloth’s prison was built in a region of the galaxy known as The Maw. Thanks to Solo: A Star Wars Story, The Maw was also revealed in the official canon. It’s a massive black hole with an extremely strong gravitational well from which the crew of the Millennium Falcon barely escaped when they tried to evade the Empire. The Maw is home to massive tentacled creatures, the summa-verminoths, which were introduced in the Solo movie.
It makes sense that the Ones chose such a dangerous place to imprison Abeloth. The Ones defeated and re-imprisoned Abeloth every time she tried to break out when the balance of the Force was upset.
Abeloth’s prison was built in The Maw, a region of the galaxy introduced in “Solo: A Star Wars Story” in the official canon. This place is a massive black hole with an extremely strong gravitational well from which the Millennium Falcon crew narrowly escaped while trying to evade the Empire. The Maw is home to massive tentacled creatures, the summa-verminoths, which we could see in the Solo movie.
The Ones chose such a dangerous place to imprison Abeloth, which seems a logical step. Similarly, the existence of The Maw in the official canon could be an ideal tool to introduce Abeloth as a potentially dangerous Force entity that could break free, as she did in the Legends, following the death of the Ones.
In the Legends, Abeloth’s awakening and escape were triggered by Jacen Solo, Han and Leia’s son, and Han and Leia’s corruption, even before the sequel trilogy created by Disney, which “cleaned up” the canon of the Extended Universe. However, any movement in the Force found in the official canon could potentially awaken Abeloth.
Abeloth would be the perfect villain character in Rey’s next Star Wars film. The central theme of Star Wars history, the question of the balance of the Force and its disruption, perfectly fits Abeloth’s character. The events of the sequel trilogy, including Palpatine’s defeat, the fall of the Final Order, and the rare and powerful Force dyad union of Rey and Ben Solo, are all changes that could potentially lead to Abeloth’s release in the canon. Furthermore, Abeloth’s status as a more potent and dangerous threat than the Sith could provide a new and dynamic antagonist for the Star Wars universe.
Only time will tell if Lucasfilm is willing to introduce such an immensely dangerous and powerful villain as Abeloth in Rey’s next Star Wars film.
