With the game being rated in South Korea earlier this year, all the signs are there for Bethesda, part of Microsoft, to confirm that the second game in the franchise will get a facelift after the first.
Given that the source of the QuakeCon rumor is someone who has a long history of providing undoubtedly accurate information about PlayStation Plus Essential’s upcoming monthly games (even if he does tend to miss a month or two now and again), what billable-kun claims can be considered essentially credible. As always, you can read what he’s learned about the new version of id Software’s FPS on Dealabs, a French website.
Not sure what the name of the game will be yet. It will either be Quake II Remastered or Quake II Enhanced. As the new version of the first Quake was released in 2021 as Quake Enhanced, we would guess the latter, following the principle of continuity. The target platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. So all relevant consoles will have the game originally released in December 1997 (and published by Activision then!). But don’t confuse Quake II Remastered/Enhanced with Quake II RTX, released in 2019! Nvidia released that to introduce ray tracing on their RTX 2000 graphics cards, which was a novelty at the time.
QuakeCon was digital-only from 2020 to 2022 due to the pandemic; this year, the event will be more in-person again, taking place in Grapevine, Texas, at the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center from August 10 to 13. Although Bethesda has only made small reveals there in recent years, perhaps that’s why the show is so well-timed, so we’ll almost certainly hear the announcement of the revamped Quake II next week.
The question is, will Quake III Arena follow afterward? Although it was an online-focused game (and in December 1999, that was a bold move), it could be played offline against bots. Will they try again after Quake Live?
