Although Larian Studios’ game is already moddable, the situation will improve.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is considered a significant success. Even the Belgian team’s expectations have been far exceeded by the Dungeons & Dragons-based IP launched at BioWare: Larian CEO Swen Vincke admitted that he would have been happy with 100,000 concurrent players on Steam, but on Sunday, Valve’s platform had more than eight times that number. Vincke, in an interview with PCGamer, talked about plans to support the game, saying that they have no plans to put together any kind of add-on for the game, as it has several challenges that would be a challenge for them.
“Level 12-20 adventures require a different way of doing things in terms of antagonists you will have to deal with, which need a lot of development to do appropriately. This would make this much more than an expansion in development efforts. A lot of D&D adventures are sub-level 12 for precisely that reason. So it sounds like neat, easy expansion material until you start thinking about it, and it’s not as easy as one would imagine.
I know what we want to make, and the team knows where we’re heading. We’ll see where that lands. I’ve learned that you must be careful announcing things before they’re ready because sometimes you must cancel them. After all, they don’t work out. We could work on a Baldur’s Gate 3 expansion, which could be boring, and we should stop working on it. Because if we continued on something boring, we would have to sell it to you, and then we’d have to say, ‘Here’s a boring thing, and we want you to buy it.’ That would not be cool. So we have to have the freedom to experiment and do our stuff. And then, when we’re ready to announce it, we will,” Vincke said.
We also wrote earlier that Larian would like to do something smaller after Baldur’s Gate 3, and an expansion would align with that idea. The PlayStation 5 port of the game will be released on September 6. The interview mentioned that Baldur’s Gate 3 moddability would improve “dramatically” after the PS5 release, so they could plan to release the complete modding tools by then.
Although there are already some interesting ideas: for example, Tactician Plus from Feriat111 will make playing Larian’s title even harder…
