The black and vine-filled gameplay of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 doesn’t break any new ground, but it does introduce a different symbiote…
The symbiote-wearing Peter will give the character a much more dynamic progression in the sequel. The reveal of the gameplay for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has already shown the impact of the symbiote on his mood and tone. This will inevitably result in another host becoming the monster known as Venom. It will be interesting to see how this narrative will conclude.
Should Peter or Miles wear the red symbiote and become a host to Carnage, for example, the gameplay could be full of graphic, carnage-inducing abilities.
Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales has put Insomniac in a tough spot. In Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, you’ll have to come up with satisfying abilities for Peter, because of how much fun it is to experiment with Miles’ bioelectricity and optical camouflage. The black suit solves this problem by giving Peter a whole new set of tendon-based abilities. While bonding with the symbiote, and still unsure how he comes to possess it or why he allows the symbiote to bond with him.
However, it obviously helps to enhance your skills, and your looks are unique. It represents a different body type from the Marvel Spider-Man universe. It seems that Insomniac appreciates the symbiote suit and pays homage to its inclusion in a wonderful way, but even aside from that perception, it’s simply one of the most significant gameplay changes the franchise has seen to date.
For this reason alone, players will be far more excited to play with a symbiote-laden Peter than they would be when he’s in his usual red and blue costume, and perhaps even eclipsing Miles’ own abilities in terms of excitement.
But since this particular symbiote isn’t the only one in the Spider-Man story, it would be a fantastic opportunity for Insomniac to innovate with the red symbiote and make it a wearable costume as well.
The red symbiote in Spider-Man has almost always been firmly tied to serial killer Cletus Kasady. The psychotic pair is a perfect match. As Carnage, this pairing has been the protagonist of several Spider-Man comic book series. His relationship with Venom is one of the most popular threads to continue.
Of course, many other symbiotes have been given extensive storylines recently with the Knoll and all the niche, obscure world-building that this story thread has generated for Marvel, but Carnage is clearly the most popular symbiote next to Venom.
It will be interesting to see where Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 ends and what breadcrumbs it leaves for a possible third instalment. Norman Osborn becoming the Green Goblin seems inevitable based on the information already floated. It wouldn’t be surprising if Insomniac dove full-on into a symbiote saga instead.
If it does, a Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 could somehow introduce the red symbiote and develop gameplay reminiscent of the second part’s black symbiote to link up with Peter or even Miles. Insomniac shouldn’t rush this if it doesn’t deserve it, and perhaps the black suit will be the only symbiote to appear in the franchise. But gameplay would be excellent, where Peter or Miles can slap red scythes and throw other sharp symbiote tools. It would take the series down a more sinister path than the black symbiote could.
