Players looking for classic FPS action on Xbox Game Pass have been given some excellent news in a totally unexpected way…
After numerous rumours and leaks, Quake 2 Remastered has been added to Xbox Game Pass and other platforms without any advertising! Game Pass subscribers and current Quake 2 owners will receive an update that includes new resolution improvements, online multiplayer and co-op modes with cross-play enabled. Also, a new episode for players to play through.
Quake 2 Remastered was announced at the start of QuakeCon 2023 at the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center in Grapevine, Texas.
It’s the first in-person QuakeCon since 2019, when the COVID-19 outbreak forced id Software and Bethesda to host the event remotely. This year’s event, which runs from August 10-13, looks to return to its old format following the outbreak. As such, the event kicked off with confirmation that Quake 2 Remastered exists after leaks and speculation surrounding the project. In the original version of Quake 2, players took on the role of Bitterman, a Marine. He was tasked with the mission to prevent an alien invasion of Earth by an alien named Strogg. He took the fight to the aliens’ home planet in a pre-emptive strike.
While the original Quake was based on Lovecraft’s horror, id Software chose a sci-fi theme for the sequel. Quake 2 Remastered will include online multiplayer matches. For example, the good old Capture the Flag and Team Deathmatch game modes. The game will also have an online co-op mode with cross-play functionality for PC and console. It will also have updated accessibility settings and updated shadows, textures and lighting on each map.
Players on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S will be able to run Quake 2 Remastered at up to 4K resolution and 120 Hz refresh rate on compatible monitors.
Quake 2 Remastered on PC, however, requires an Intel Core i5-6600k or AMD Ryzen 5 1600 or better processor and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 or AMD RX Vega 56 or better graphics card to run in 4K. Quake 2 Remastered also adds new content. Most notably, the Call of the Machine expansion, designed by MachineGames. The remaster also includes the original expansions The Reckoning and Ground Zero.
As a bonus, Quake 2 64 will also be available for players who missed this version of Quake 2. All in all, Xbox Game Pass subscribers won’t want to miss out on experiencing Quake 2 again or for the first time with Quake 2 Remastered. (The game is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.)
