Game developer Upstream Arcade and publisher Good Shepherd Entertainment have announced when we can expect the new Hellboy game (game adaptations of this IP are rare, but some are even worse; think Twin Peaks).
There’s not much left to wait, as the cross-gen game will be here in the autumn (it’s a bit unusual that nearly three years after the launch of the current console generation, some prominent titles are still being developed for the previous console pair, too), so anyone who might have played a lot on the 2013 consoles (PlayStation 4, Xbox One) or a version of the 2017 Nintendo Switch won’t be missing out. Interestingly, in the video below from IGN, the trailer doesn’t list PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Good Shepherd Entertainment confirmed to Gematsu that these two ports would come at the same time as the others.
We wrote the following when the game was announced in December: “Hellboy: Web of Wyrd is a third-person roguelite action adventure with an original story created in partnership with Dark Horse Comics and creator Mike Mignola. It features monstrous toe-to-toe brawling. Like the comics, the game sends Hellboy on a series of vastly different and wholly unique adventures; while those stories stand on their own, they are all tied to the mysterious legacy of The Butterfly House.
Built in 1962 by occultist Pasquale Deneveaux, The Butterfly House is more than a mere residence; it’s a gateway. Its perverse angles and non-Euclidean geometries were designed with a singular foul purpose in mind: to open doorways into a terrible and fascinating dimension called The Wyrd. Twenty years later, an agent of the B.P.R.D. is sent on a reconnaissance mission to the mansion and promptly goes missing. It’s up to you—Hellboy—and your team of Bureau agents to find your missing colleague and uncover the secrets of The Butterfly House. During the investigation, you will explore wondrous and strange planes of existence within The Wyrd, each home to powerful monsters, forgotten godforms, magnificent treasures, and powerful secrets. But be warned, because ancient evil stagnates within the furthest reaches of The Wyrd… evil that is eager to be let out.
[The game has] a graphical style that evokes the original art style of the comics and makes every moment of the game look – and feel – like it was ripped straight from the comic books. […] Chain together hard-hitting melee and ranged attacks to fight a diverse array of increasingly nightmarish enemies [with] a narrative true to the spirit of the comics, tying together several independent stories into one unified Hellboy experience.”
Hellboy: Web of Wyrd will be released on October 4 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC (Steam), PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
