Oppenheimer has overtaken a successful superhero blockbuster! It became the third biggest movie of the year. Visionary director Christopher Nolan’s latest masterpiece follows the life of the theoretical physicist who led the development of the atomic bomb. The political and personal consequences for him were enormous. Since its release on 21 July, the same day as Barbie, Oppenheimer has consistently exceeded box office expectations. Especially for an R-rated, three-hour historical biopic.

Now, more than a month after its release, the film has reached another major milestone at the box office. According to Box Office Mojo, Oppenheimer overtook Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3! This makes it the third highest-grossing film on the 2023 worldwide box office list. At the time of writing, Oppenheimer has grossed $854,078,950 worldwide. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 grossed $845,536,306. Of course, the movie still lags far behind Barbie and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. They both grossed more than $1.3 billion.

Oppenheimer’s box-office success is even more impressive when you consider that this is an R-rated film, which, of course, reduces the size of the audience that can see it in theatres, unlike Marvel’s PG-13 superhero films, which are marketed to the masses.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is just the latest superhero film to be blown away by Oppenheimer on its way to third place. In addition to Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Verse, it also beat the new Ant-Man and the Wasp and The Flash at the box office.

As for the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, it recently overtook Deadpool 2. Another comic book movie, The Joker, is in second place. The latter grossed more than $1 billion in 2019. As Nolan’s latest blockbuster comes to the end of its phenomenal box office run, it is likely to remain in second place behind Joker on the R-rated list. And in terms of 2023 box office, it will be third behind Barbie and Super Mario Bros. However, the success of Nolan’s film should not be underestimated.
