MOVIE NEWS – Director Michael Chaves has provided new insights into the upcoming installment of The Conjuring franchise, The Conjuring 4, following the end-credits scene in The Nun 2 which hinted at the return of the Warrens. Warning, the following contains spoilers for The Nun 2!

Chaves, who previously directed loosely related entries such as The Curse of La Llorona and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, is rejoining the franchise produced by James Wan with the sequel to the successful 2018 spinoff, The Nun 2. The sequel also sees the return of Taissa Farmiga as Sister Irene and Bonnie Aarons as the titular demon, Valak, who embarks on a series of murders against priests and nuns across Europe while in search of a significant relic.

Upon the release of The Nun 2, SlashFilm approached Michael Chaves to discuss the film’s end-credits scene and its relation to the planned The Conjuring 4. The director revealed that the script for the fourth installment is still being written but expressed excitement for the project and promised a “grand finale.”

In the end-credits scene of The Nun 2, Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga reprise their roles as Ed and Lorraine Warren when they receive an urgent call from Father Gordon, played by Steve Coulter. Their daughter, Judy, picks up the phone and informs her parents that they are being called due to an emergency, although the exact nature of the call is not disclosed.

At first glance, the audience might assume that the scene serves as a flashback, setting up the Warrens’ next exorcism. However, keen-eyed viewers will notice that Judy is portrayed by Sterling Jerins, confirming that the scene takes place after the exorcism featured in the original The Conjuring series.

Thus, The Nun 2’s closing scene appears to serve as a loose setup for The Conjuring 4, while also leaving the door open for what case the Warrens will encounter next. The scene’s sense of urgency also hints at a more significant stake for the upcoming installment. Given that The Conjuring 4 promises to be the final mainline entry in the franchise, it will be intriguing to see what twists lie ahead for the fate of the Warrens.
