TECH NEWS – It’s also why the company bought Nod.ai, and could be starting to catch up with Nvidia. Of course, this will not be an easy task.
AMD has announced that it is acquiring Nod.ai, an open source artificial intelligence platform, to bolster the company’s AI software resources. The “Reds” are in a technology race with Nvidia and are currently losing in AI (it’s no coincidence that companies are buying chips from the “Greens” in droves, and that’s why Microsoft is planning to produce a new chip with OpenAI, as we wrote recently).
“The acquisition of Nod.ai is expected to significantly enhance our ability to provide AI customers with open software that allows them to easily deploy high-performance AI models tuned for AMD hardware. The addition of the talented Nod.ai team accelerates our ability to advance open source compiler technology and enable portable, high-performance AI solutions across the AMD product portfolio. Nod.ai’s technologies are already widely deployed today in the cloud, at the edge and across a broad range of endpoints,” said Vamsi Boppana, senior vice president of Artificial Intelligence at AMD.
Nod.ai is known for its powerful machine learning distribution mechanism, SHARK. The automation software eliminates the need for manual tuning and accelerates the development of artificial intelligence models, potentially providing a useful hand in the future of AMD’s CDNA, XDNA, RDNA and Zen architectures. It is not yet known how much AMD has officially paid, but this will be revealed when the deal is finalised. What is certain is that AMD is looking to close the gap with Nvidia, which has a head start on CUDA.
Next-generation AI accelerators, such as the Instinct MI400, will also be released soon, which could bring significant computing power to companies and users who want it, making the AI market much more competitive, which is always a good thing, because monopoly never leads to anything good.
