Dragami Games has redesigned the concept of the game, so the story of the chainsaw lady will no longer be a remake, but just a remaster.
Yoshimi Yasuda, president of Dragami Games, the developer of Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP, said on Twitter that the studio has received requests to redesign the game to make it a remaster rather than a full remake. And that’s it, that’s all the studio president has written about the project that was announced not yesterday, but more than a year ago. Since all this time has passed, we are a little concerned about the state of development.
Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP was announced in July 2022. At that time, the plan was to remake the 2012 hack’n’slash action game and release it in 2023. That’s not going to happen, as we reported in August that Dragami Games had pushed the game’s release back to 2024. Meanwhile, the target platforms are still unknown. Since they expect a remaster, it could be cross-gen, so not only the PlayStation 5 and Xbox series, but also the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One could see a facelifted version of Lollipop Chainsaw (maybe PC too).
To quote ourselves from August: “It’s an interesting phrase to call the IP a series, even though no sequel to the action-adventure hack’n’slash game has been made since (Suicide Squad director James Gunn admitted that Tomo Ikeda and Suda51’s game was an inspiration for him, but that’s different), so Dragami Games, which was formed out of Kadokawa Games, might be teasing something, because if there is a series of something, it’s not a series even if they’re reimagining it, because you’re still getting the original game, just with a slightly different approach.
How is Dragami related to IP? The answer is simple: while in the West Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment was the publisher of Lollipop Chainsaw, in Japan it was Kadokawa Games who took over the role, so the rights were not hard to get (and Warner probably let it go).
