MOVIE NEWS – Writer/director Matthew Vaughn has finally confirmed the start date for Kingsman 3, after a six-year wait since the last Eggsy adventure.
After a long wait for the final chapter of Eggsy’s journey, Matthew Vaughn has finally confirmed the start date for Kingsman 3. The spy film franchise, based on the comic books of the same name by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons, centres on young British hooligan Gary “Eggsy” Unwin, who is recruited to join the secret, independent, intelligent agency Kingsman to protect the world from a variety of major threats. Starring Taron Egerton and Colin Firth, and directed by Kick-Ass alum Matthew Vaughn, the films received mixed and positive reviews from critics, but were mostly blockbusters.
At the New York Comic Con, where Screen Rant was present, Vaughn gave a special panel discussion to give another update on the long-awaited Kingsman Part 3. The writer/director confirmed that filming on the currently subtitled The Blue Blood threequel sequel will finally begin in 2024, after years of delays and a focus on the poorly received prequel, The King’s Man.
“Next year we’re rebooting Kick-Ass and making Kingsman 3… Kick-Ass changed people’s perception of what a superhero movie was at the time. So we’re doing it again. So none of the other Kick-Ass characters are in it. We’d love to bring them back after the reboot, but this reboot is going in a direction that I can’t really talk about. But it’s going to be fun.”
While critics have generally had mixed reactions to the 2017 sequel, The Golden Circle, the arrival of Kingsman 3 continues to be met with high anticipation among audiences, primarily because it was previously indicated that it would be the last film Egerton would direct as Eggsy. The Golden Globe-winning actor himself even indicated last April that he wanted the three-part sequel to be a “fitting end” for the character that helped him rise to stardom, and that while he is committed to returning for the next installment, he would like to wait until it is the right story.
Vaughn has remained similarly committed to a sequel to the next film, although one of the questions surrounding the film is whether it can recapture the success of the first two episodes. The 2021 prequel, The King’s Man, somewhat tarnished the franchise’s name, as not only did it receive the worst reviews of the three films, but it was also a box office failure, hitting theaters in the middle of a struggling theatrical release and grossing only $126 million against a $100 million production budget.
While some sequels end up failing due to the extended time between productions, the various delays of Kingsman: The Blue Bloods may even help its chances. Following the failure of the prequel film, many audiences demanded a return to the Egg stories, and Egerton’s continued success outside the franchise in films such as Rocketman, Black Bird and Tetris prove that fans of the series will welcome his return to starring. As Vaughn is also looking to launch the Kick-Ass reboot in 2024, it will be interesting to see which project takes priority for the movie set.
