TECH NEWS – Huawei: 10 Gbps networks will be needed in homes in the near future.
Huawei Technologies and du, one of the main telecommunications providers in the United Arab Emirates, presented the world’s first smart home with 5.5G technology as part of the 2023 Global Mobile Broadband Forum (MBBF). Thanks to Huawei’s latest 5G-Advanced wireless access technology, residents of the home of the future can enjoy 3D videos without glasses, experience 8K UHD streaming, and XR games that combine real and virtual environments. At the conference, the company’s managers emphasized that both residential and industrial use require an increase in network capacity and the development of technologies.
A prototype of the home of the future was presented in Dubai in the framework of the Global Mobile Broadband Forum (MBBF) by Huawei Technologies and du. In the world’s first smart home operating with 5.5G technology, the 10 Gbps speed network enables the use of new applications such as 3D videos that can be seen without glasses, with the naked eye, and XR games that combine real and virtual environments. With the help of the new technology, users can also take advantage of hyper-fast internet at home, for example downloading movies in seconds.
Growing network demands must be dealt with
According to Huawei, growing user needs are driving the development of content and applications, and the demand for network capacity is also increasing in parallel. All of this represents a serious challenge for service providers, because 10 Gbps networks will be needed in homes in the near future, the company believes.
In his opening speech, Li Peng, Vice President of Huawei Technologies and President of the Telecommunications Business, emphasized: “To exploit the potential and services inherent in 5G technology, we must start building the network of the future today. We are already well on our way to the business success of 5G, 5G-Advanced technology is the next step in the development of 5G. Fifth-generation mobile networks play a critical role in the entire economic transformation, enabling new innovations in general-purpose technologies.” The president added, “If you look back in history, every major economic transformation has resulted from innovation in general-purpose technologies.”
Five technological trends shape the digital future
According to Li Peng, five important technological trends that will define the digital future can be expected in the coming period: glasses-free 3D technology, self-driving vehicles that generate large amounts of data and spread rapidly, massively growing next-generation manufacturing, expanded cellular IoT technology, which it promotes the connection of devices and more efficient data transfer, as well as the rise of artificial intelligence. All of these trends are creating increasing network demands – Huawei predicts, for example, that the demand for artificial intelligence computing power will explode and reach 100 times the current level by 2025.
More than 10 million 5G connections operate in industrial environments
In the opening speech of the event, Ken Hu, president of Huawei Technologies, discussed the possibilities of 5G industrial use in addition to residential use: “We currently have more than 50,000 industrial 5G applications worldwide, and more than 10 million 5G connections are already operating in industrial environments. 5G will bring massive economic growth globally and is expected to add a trillion dollars to the global economy by 2030, with many benefits.” The executive added: “Over the past four years, we have identified key industrial application areas where we can maximize the potential of 5G, such as remote control, video backhaul, i.e. the transmission of raw video content from a source to relay stations, machine vision and positioning. We have also identified industries such as mining, ports and manufacturing where we can expand 5G capabilities.”
According to Hu, mobile service providers can better position themselves in industrial digitalization by strengthening their existing capabilities in cloud services, industrial application development and full system integration. All of this also enables them to effectively take advantage of the new opportunities associated with the digitalization of industries. According to the leader, many tasks await the industry players in the future, including increasing capacity, developing technology, ensuring a better experience for users, as well as the industrial distribution of 5G and the effective use of the investments inherent in it.
