Samuel Villarreal, lead developer of the Nightdive engine (System Shock Remake), said that his team is ready for the return of Hexen.
In fact, Phil Spencer still has a lot of work to do within Xbox Game Studios to integrate all of Activision Blizzard’s studios. But that doesn’t mean that Microsoft’s games division is giving up the opportunity to sign deals with outside teams to develop certain games. This time, it’s a game that the Xbox boss is very fond of: the classic Hexen!
Did you notice Phil Spencer’s T-shirt at the Xbox Games Showcase? You can see it below, and it’s about a game that’s very dear to his heart, Hexen. It’s a classic fantasy FPS game developed by Raven Software and published by id Software (parents of Doom and Quake) in 1995. Well, the guide talked about the title on the official Xbox podcast. He noted that he “jokes about Hexen because he remembers playing it as a kid”.
For now, there are “no plans” for a return of the classic. However, there are already some who have offered to remake the title. And in more ways than one. Samuel Villarreal, lead developer of the Nightdive engine (System Shock Remake), sent the following message to Spencer via Twitter:
“Just letting you know, having a long running history and extensive knowledge with Heretic and Hexen, just want to point out that me and my team are very well suited for the job.”
This does not mean the game is back, of course. But it is true that the possibility exists. Phil Spencer is actually the head of several studios that make good shooter games. Id Software, 343 Industries, Machine Games, The Coalition, Activision (Infinity Ward, Treyarch, Sledgehammer Games and others). That’s a lot of studios and veterans who could take the job. Of course, it could also be that they are too busy with their own projects. If you’re curious to see what Nightdive Studios can do, you should read our review of System Shock.
