This rate is unbelievable even for us (although we have unfortunately seen price increases in the last two years, especially for food…). especially for food).
September saw the incredible price hike that Sony has across all three PlayStation Plus tiers (PlayStation Plus tiers (PlayStation Plus Essential, PlayStation Plus Extra, PlayStation Plus Premium), with the price of twelve-month subscriptions will increase significantly depending on the tier. Eric Lempel, senior vice president of international marketing for Sony Interactive Entertainment, tried to defend himself in an interview with Barron’s:
“We want to make PlayStation Plus great. With our relaunch last year and the introduction of the tier system, a lot of consumers recognized that there’s a lot of value in PlayStation 5. Like virtually everything else in the world, we have to look at our pricing and adjust to market conditions. I’m happy to say that unlike a lot of other subscription services out there, we haven’t touched PlayStation Plus pricing for 85% of the world in many years. So this is the first time we have done anything there.
It’s about what you get in the service in terms of the type of games and the quality of the games. I can’t comment on what the competition is doing. But for us, we think we’re offering a great curated catalog of games, as well as other features and services with PlayStation Plus. And with the three tiers, we’re giving you the ability to engage as much or as little as you want, depending on what you want to do. It’s a very different proposition, but one that has resonated with consumers. Since we introduced the tiers, we’ve seen a third of the Plus user base opt for the top two tiers, which was more than we expected,” Lempel said.
Aside from the fact that Microsoft has also raised the subscription price for Game Pass, this is a very poor justification for Sony to raise the price of to raise the price of PlayStation Plus. So far, we’ve seen one innovation: PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers can play PlayStation 5 games from the cloud… but only on PS5. That’s not good enough.
