TECH NEWS – As details of Google’s antitrust lawsuit emerge, the situation between Apple and Google is heating up.
The two companies are not on the best of terms (but Google spends a lot of money every year just to make Apple’s devices the default search engine on iPhones), but the rivalry has also led to significant improvements in iOS and Android, and now the Cupertino-based tech giant is saying that it once viewed Google’s operating system as a massive tracking device, recording our every move and sending it to Google’s servers.
We can see the documents, courtesy of the US Department of Justice, which have emerged as part of the antitrust case against Google. One was an internal Apple presentation attached to an email. It was sent by Eddy Cue (Apple’s Senior Vice President) to Tim Cook (President) in 2013. The presentation talks about how there is a competition with Google on privacy and how Apple does it much better. The company will only integrate data into its services if it leads to better customer service, but Google does it every time. Google’s voice search solution is tied to the user’s account, while Siri’s user data is tied to the digital assistant and nothing else.
The presentation was part of Cue’s testimony in September. The DoJ accuses Google of creating a monopoly among search engines, for example through exclusivity deals (such as the one it has with Apple for $18-20 billion a year). Cue was also asked about the revenue-sharing agreement between Apple and Google, but no details were released.
Whether we use iOS or Android, the companies are tracking us, but it could be worse, as Chinese Huawei phones (at least in China) even leave the camera on, not to mention the microphone. Big Brother is watching…
