The console, which is not officially called PlayStation 5 Slim (replacing the original version released almost three years ago), is not much smaller and has some interesting features.
Dave2D had the chance to take apart the redesigned version of Sony’s current-generation console on YouTube. Externally, there is a slight difference, but it can’t be called significant (mainly PS1 – PSOne, PS2 – PS2 Slim had a serious size reduction). You can also check out the internal components in the video, but there is definitely a difference in temperature.
While the original PlayStation 5 was between 60 and 63°C, the PlayStation 5 Slim was between 62 and 64°C. So the smaller console was hotter during the test, and while one swallow doesn’t make a summer, this console may be more prone to overheating, and it’s no coincidence that the original PS5 had a huge cooling system. (Of course, it’s worth keeping it clean, as it won’t be particularly noisy and won’t get too hot).
The PlayStation 5 Slim also performed worse in terms of power consumption when running Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Astro’s Playroom and Death Stranding: Director’s Cut. You can also see that the optical drive can be removed without tools. Dave2D thinks that Sony can somehow cool the same chip with a smaller system, but he may have missed something and he’s not into that sort of thing, so someone else may be able to disprove him (the higher default temperatures make us suspect that the cooling system will be a bit weak).
The PlayStation 5 Slim will be available in Europe soon, but if you don’t want to spend the extra money to use the console upright, you’ll want to pick up the old stock while you can, as the redesigned PS5 comes with a stand for $30 (and we’d rather not comment on that), while the original console comes with it.
