Nintendo Wants To Break The Tradition Of Console Cycles!

Even though the Nintendo Switch will be seven years old next year, the Japanese company still wants to release new games for it.

In Nintendo’s second quarter annual report, Shuntaro Furukawa, President of the Big N, said that the company will continue to release new games and content for the Switch “without being bound by the traditional concept of the platform life cycle. In other words, they don’t want to follow the example of releasing a new console and then immediately switching to it, but instead want a softer transition. We’ve seen this with PlayStation 4>PlayStation 5 and Xbox One>Xbox series.

“Nintendo Switch will enter its eighth year in March 2024. We will continue to release new titles and content for Nintendo Switch, not bound by the traditional concept of platform lifecycle. Going forward, we want to continue to see many consumers playing Nintendo Switch and maintain our business momentum. We will continue to offer new ways for users to enjoy Nintendo Switch in the long term by expanding the content available through Nintendo Switch Online,” Furukawa said, adding that as of September 30, there were more than 38 million Nintendo Switch Online subscribers and more than 330 million Nintendo Account (free!) registrations.

And Super Mario Bros. Wonder (if you look at it from the Wii and DS) has become the fastest-selling Mario game to date (no surprise considering the still-growing game industry…), selling 4.3 million copies in its first two weeks. Furukawa also commented: “Super Mario Bros. Wonder, which was released worldwide on October 20, achieved cumulative worldwide sales of 4.3 million units in its first two weeks. This makes it the fastest-selling Super Mario title ever. They also tend to sell consistently over a long period of time. We expect this title to be an attractive choice for consumers during the upcoming holiday season and to continue to sell well into next year. Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the first all-new entry in the side-scrolling Super Mario series in about 11 years. This title offers surprising new 2D Mario experiences, and we believe that this, combined with the global excitement surrounding The Super Mario Bros. Movie, resulted in the large sales volume.

The Switch has also surpassed 132.46 million sales… and they denied the new platform’s rumors.
