The artificial intelligence co-pilot that appeared in the news yesterday to help plan scenarios, dialog and missions has not been well received.
It wasn’t that long ago that Hollywood went on strike. Writers there fought against the use of AI in TV and movies because, according to the workers, it would take away a lot of work and the quality of writing in general would be poor or average at best. It is already worth preparing for a strike in the games industry, although it is not yet clear what the scale and consequences of such a strike might be.
Eias Toufexis (the voice of Adam Jensen in Deus Ex and Sam Coe in Starfield) wrote on Twitter that if you want to start a voice acting career, don’t even bother, because the anonymous background non-playable characters (NPCs) that were the start of many people’s careers will all disappear, and he’s already bitter about it. It was then suggested that it might be worth forming a union, to which he replied that “another f___ing strike is coming.
Shelby Young (God of War, Genshin Impact) and Xander Mobus (Joker in Persona 5) also expressed their dissatisfaction. Mobus says it seems like a waste of money and resources that could be spent on the people who make the games. In his opinion, the content generated by AI is mostly below the quality of human work.
Rami Ismail, a game developer, put it succinctly: “A lot of people will get fired, games will get worse, and the C-suite will get millions.” And Jill Schar, senior narrative designer at The Lamplighters League, urged developers to look at the SAG-AFTRA protests and the connection to AI, as she says actors are on the front lines of the fight against unethical use of AI and corporate greed.
It’s understandable because human work is always better, but it should be paid, and a lot of people don’t even think about that.
