With the developer who created the franchise no longer at the studio, PlatinumGames will likely continue the tradition.
Just think: Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe, and Okami all went on without Hideki Kamiya. Devil May Cry even showed up in 2019, as Devil May Cry V, running on the RE engine, came out at that time (and it was an excellent game). The same can be said for Bayonetta: Kamiya launched it (he was the director of the first installment, and the supervisor of the second, third, and spin-off Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon), but he took a back seat during the development of the others, although he did have some influence on their development.
We also wrote about Kamiya leaving PlatinumGames and not being able to work in the games industry for about a year (presumably because he’s on gardening leave, so he can’t take another job in the industry until then), and he started a YouTube channel where he talks about some of the topics in his typical style. In his latest video, he responds to comments, and the future of the Bayonetta IP is one of the topics he touches on.
The whole story he envisioned will go to the grave with him, so Bayonetta 4 or future episodes will be quite different from his vision. Since Bayonetta is PlatinumGames’ biggest long-running IP (admittedly, this required Nintendo’s involvement, as the Japanese company funded the development of the second installment, which is why it became a Wii U exclusive at the time), it’s almost a given that there will be a Bayonetta 4, and Nintendo would welcome it. (Granted, another foursome is a bit of a problem for the big N: Metroid Prime 4… I wonder when Nintendo will tell us more about that?)
Bayonetta 3 wasn’t bad, and is probably on par with the first installment, so that’s another reason to make a fourth installment.
