MOVIE NEWS – 26 years after the worst film in the Mortal Kombat franchise, Mortal Kombat 2 is ready to reverse the role of Johnny Cage, which the disastrous 1997 cinema pushed aside…
Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2 is ready to reverse the opening scene of Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. The mentioned scene is considered by many to be the worst in the franchise. Johnny Cage’s return in the upcoming sequel is his first appearance in the film franchise since 1997’s disastrous Annihilation. Although he did not appear in the 2021 reboot, it is no secret that he will be there in the upcoming sequel.
Since his first appearance in the Mortal Kombat video game in 1992, Johnny Cage has become one of the franchise’s most popular characters.
Cage is one of a handful of classic characters joining the cast of Mortal Kombat 2. With this, a substantial ensemble of fan-favourite fighters was assembled. The story of the sequel has not been detailed yet. But Johnny Cage will undoubtedly have a bigger role in the reboot than 26 years ago.
Eliminating Johnny Cage at the start of Mortal Kombat: Annihilation proved to be a huge mistake
Upon its release in 1997, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation failed miserably with critics and audiences alike. One of the heavily criticized aspects of the film is that Cage is killed off right at the beginning of the film. In the opening scene of Annihilation, Shao Khan invades Earth. He takes Sonya Blade hostage; Cage tries to save him, but Shao Khan kills him and breaks his neck in what was intended to be the film’s shocking death scene.
The decision to kill off Johnny Cage in Annihilation proved unpopular with those who saw the 1995 Mortal Kombat film.
Cage played a big role in the original Mortal Kombat movie. He was a movie star who wanted to prove his martial arts skills. He killed Scorpio in the martial arts competition and, together with Liu, rescued Sonya from the Outworld. In comparison, Johnny Cage had barely a minute of screen time in Annihilation before he was killed off. It was initially planned to be resurrected in the Devastation sequel. However, due to the failure of Annihilation, the sequel was eventually shelved, so Cage’s death rudely ended the character’s story.
Could Cage become a lead in Mortal Kombat 2?!
Cage gets better treatment in the new franchise. Even though he did not appear in any capacity in the 2021 reboot. Director Simon McQuoid stated that Cage was not included in the film because Cage was “too complex” for the story. (After Heroic Hollywood.) However, she is hinted at at the very end of the film when Cole Young heads to Los Angeles to find her. This prepares the figure for a major role in the sequel, where he will play Karl Urban. More than likely, he will be fighting with the other heroes in the Outworld tournament. Casting an actor of Urban’s calibre, combined with the first film’s lineup and plans for a sequel, there’s little doubt that Mortal Kombat 2 will look to rectify one of Mortal Kombat: Annihilation’s worst decisions.
