MOVIE NEWS – Known for his acerbic wit and bold ideas, Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody, who won an Oscar for Juno, is making his first foray into the land of horror comedy. 2009’s The Devil’s Inside You, in which Megan Fox played a bloodthirsty cheerleader, now boasts a cult following.
Cody’s new opus Lisa Frankenstein, a twist on the classic Frankenstein story, has earned a similar status: a grieving heroine (Kathryn Newton) longing for love and understanding brings a dead man (Cole Sprouse) back to life to fulfill her dreams. The new story is also brought to life by an absence.
“In the eighties, I enjoyed watching the Frankenstein myth being used in several genres as a ‘how to create the perfect woman’, the best example being The Strange Experiment in ’85,” Cody explained to Empire magazine. – Interestingly enough, the creation of the perfect man has somehow been ignored, except maybe for the Rocky Horror Picture Show, which I love, and we refer to it in our film. It made me think, what if a girl finds the right man, the only problem with him is that he’s not very talkative because he’s dead. How can you breathe some life into her? When it occurred to me that a locked tanning bed might be a possibility, the story was already on track.”
Lisa Frankenstein is directed by Zelda Williams, daughter of Robin Williams, who died tragically and is her first feature film.
