We’ve already questioned the wisdom of this, but rumor has it that Konami is looking to remake something else from Hideo Kojima’s legacy (he’s been out of the company for over eight years).
It’s official that Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater will be remade (it’s called Metal Gear Solid 3 Delta), but a Spanish site, Areajugones, has reported that Konami is also completely remaking the FIRST Metal Gear Solid. At least this makes sense, as the game, which was originally released in 1998 for the PS1 and then in 2000 for the PC, is technologically quite outdated and it would be really useful to release a modernized version of it. The Spanish site claims that Konami has been working on a remake for years and will focus on it once Metal Gear Solid 3 Delta is released.
The Metal Gear Solid remake won’t be coming to PlayStation 4, which is understandable considering we’re talking about hardware that’s been out for over a decade. It would be like waiting until 2010 to expect a port of a major (unlicensed!) game to be made for PS2. But it is in development for PlayStation 5, so it will be a current-gen title. We haven’t heard of an Xbox or PC version, but since the remake of the third installment is getting one, there will probably be no exceptions here either.
It’s fair to say why we should believe Areajugones, and it’s safe to say that the site has already published correct information about the DLC of God of War: Ragnarök, so the editors must have reliable sources. They claim that this remake could be one of their most ambitious projects for the next few years. However, it is a double-edged sword. It may be ambitious in its vision, but at the same time the expectations of the fans will be similarly high.
Of course, all this is not official yet, but if it is a remake of the first part, we can at least legitimately say that it is, because it emulates the third part on a relatively fair PC PS2 in a way that the official re-release in the Master Collection is far behind…
