Microsoft is not off to a good start this year, if the story is true.
December saw the release of Larian Studios’ hugely popular and successful Baldur’s Gate 3 for Xbox series. Unfortunately, the port isn’t perfect: the game crashes, losing everything you’ve collected so far (a few hours of wasted gameplay), and now someone has been banned for sharing a video of the Belgian team’s game. A few days ago, a user named Daddy-Vegas posted on Reddit that he had recorded several nude clips from Baldur’s Gate 3 and that they were automatically uploaded to Microsoft’s servers, which led to his ban. The three clips resulted in a total ban of 366 days, and since this is a leap year, that’s exactly one year…
“I recorded 3 clips last night of some naked camping fun. By default, Xbox uploads all recorded clips to the server for easy sharing. Each clip counted as a separate infraction and got my account banned for a year. I’m hoping the appeals process will fix this, but as of now; I can’t play any game that requires a network connection (basically making all the money I’ve put into Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III over the last 6 months even more worthless),” the banned user wrote. The appeal was denied by Microsoft, who said they believed the ban was justified…
Meanwhile, Microsoft president Brad Smith has previously criticized the UK’s competition watchdog, the CMA, for forcing the Redmond-based company to redesign the deal to own Activision’s Blizzard King. Two and a half months have passed since then, and today Smith struck a very different tone on BBC Radio 4’s Today program. He would not back down from the concerns he had raised in the past, but he would phrase them differently today. He felt that the CMA had stuck to its guns, but that its decision was tough and fair. This was the reason why Microsoft had to lease the rights to cloud gaming in the UK to Ubisoft.
The Baldur’s Gate case is still an embarrassment.
