MOVIE NEWS – Director Matthew Vaughn wants to build a blockbuster franchise around the character of Argylle: The Super Spy, breaking a 13-year curse.
The director is a master of action film and can think in series (Kick-Ass, Kingsman, X-Men), his work has been a hit at the box office, but hasn’t been as successful as he would have liked. The critics were not crazy about what he was bringing to the table, and Vaughn was hurt. Now he wants to make it better.
With Argyll: The Superhero, Vaughn has certainly made a big splash, because while his new opus is a $200 million spy movie with amazing action, it also holds up a mirror to the genre. The heroine of the story is a writer, Elly (Bryce Dallas Howard), whose favorite character is Argylle: The Super Spy (Henry Cavill). Suddenly, real spies invade Elly’s life because they resent the fact that the story she has invented is too much like the real thing – and the cat-and-mouse game begins, in which the fictional spies are fought by flesh-and-blood marauding figures.
According to ScreenRant, with this film Vaughn is putting all his eggs in one basket: if his calculations work, the new franchise will be given a free pass and back on top. Everything is in place, with the director revealing that he has enough material for at least two sequels.
The spectacular trailer for Argylle: The Super Spy is a cautionary tale. Many of the trailers are a selection of the best moments from the film, and it is only in the cinema that the viewer realizes that all the good jokes have already been in the trailer. The trailer for Argylle: The Super Spy, however, only selects from the first 28 minutes, so the best is left for the cinema.
