Take-Two Complains About Remedy Entertainment’s New Logo!

Rockstar Games, which is owned by Take-Two, has today’s unpopular theme as the letter R.

Last April, Remedy Entertainment (Max Payne, Alan Wake, Quantum Break, Control…) announced that it would change its logo after 20 years. At the time, the Finnish studio explained: “Creating a new logo and a refreshed visual identity for Remedy has been an emotional journey, like anything related to art. Those of you who have followed Remedy for a long time know how important artistic direction is to us. Not just in our games, but in how our studio identity looks. Not to mention our hoodies!

As a game development studio, we have come a long way since we started back in 1995. Remedy is constantly evolving. The bullet inside the letter R in the old logo represented the era of Max Payne, but the Remedy of today is much bigger than one game; we have a portfolio of games, new and old. It was time to update and redefine our visual identity to bring more consistency, showcase our evolution over the years, and better express our vision for today’s Remedy,” the Finns wrote.

A few months later, Rockstar filed a complaint, at least in the U.K., but surely elsewhere as well, because they felt Remedy’s R was too similar to Rockstar’s R. It is interesting to note that there was quite a bit of integration between the two companies: Max Payne 2 was published by Rockstar and the third part was developed by them after Take-Two bought the IP rights for $10 million. The former recently confirmed after the release of Alan Wake II that a modernization of Max’s story is already in development, while the latter is working on Grand Theft Auto VI.

Now, Twitter user @usemyhandle has posted that there is a trademark dispute between the two companies over the Remedy logo with and without the Remedy name, initiated by Take-Two. This is ridiculous!
