The Witcher 4’s Development Phase Kicks Off This Year!

According to the studio head of CD Projekt RED (CDPR), the Polish team will work hard on the game in 2024.

Adam Badowski is not only the studio head of CDPR, but also the joint CEO. In an interview with Reuters  he said that the plan is to start the production phase of Polaris in 2024, which means that the development of The Witcher 4 will start this year. We’ve heard before that CDPR plans to have around 400 employees working on the game by mid-year (i.e. summer), but we’d like to make a small correction: Polaris is not only the codename of The Witcher 4, but also of the next trilogy. Badowski also talked about the codenamed Orion project, which is a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 (led by the North American studio that opened in Boston).

According to Badowski, it is still in the concept stage, so development has not yet begun. The plan is to have about 80 people working on the game by the end of the year. He added that the team is considering integrating multiplayer elements, but did not give any further details. But Reuters also highlighted another interesting fact: CDPR has set up a team to look at ways to use artificial intelligence in development without cutting jobs.

The Witcher 4 will be the first game that CDPR will not develop with its own technology, so it will no longer use REDengine, but Epic Games’ increasingly popular Unreal Engine 5. This game, announced as early as May 2022, will be a great entry point for newcomers to the franchise, according to the Polish company. Two weeks ago, we wrote about the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, as several developers have already made their way to Boston, and the US-based team already has some exciting ideas.

The only question now is whether the Polish company will be able to launch its next games with the new engine and the quality of the content. It didn’t work with Cyberpunk 2077 at the end of 2020…
