Although the streaming service would love to have an app on Apple’s AR headset, the investment is only worth it if it would pay off for Netflix…
The Apple Vision Pro is already available for pre-order in the US (requires a US Apple ID), many have not made a visionOS app. Netflix is one of them. Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters told Stratechery that the device is not a priority for the service’s subscribers, presumably because there aren’t enough copies of the headset to make it worth the company’s while to get serious about the Apple Vision Pro…
“Not by any unwillingness or lack of desire to [have an app on Vision Pro], but even if you note that we’re looking at as close to ubiquity on devices perspective, the decisions that lead to that are we try and be very rigorous about, “What’s the effort to integrate on any given set of devices and what’s the benefit for the members that we serve? We have to be careful that we don’t invest in places that don’t really provide a return, and I would say we’ll see where things go with Vision Pro. Certainly we’re always in discussions with Apple to try to figure that out, but right now the device is so subscale that it’s not really relevant to most of our members,” Peters said.
This situation could and will change in the future, as a cheaper budget version of the Apple Vision Pro, which currently starts at $3,500, is rumored to be coming and could be released sometime in 2025. This could give Apple a foothold in the market, and Netflix could respond by possibly starting to support visionOS, as the streaming service is currently not very impressed with the 160-180,000 pre-orders for the AR headset.
So for now, don’t get your hopes up that Apple’s headset will be supported by Netflix. That could change later.
