Respawn Entertainment’s game has received the kind of recognition that can put it on the shelf. (Or if they don’t, Electronic Arts will.)
The category in which Star Wars Jedi: Survivor won was Best Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media. It should be emphasized here that this is a custom soundtrack, so we should not think of something like EA Sports FC (the soundtrack is composed solely and exclusively of licensed music), but of songs written directly for the game. The winners of the award are Stephen Barton and Gordy Haab, the composers of Respawn’s game.
This is the second time the Grammys have recognized a video game. With Star Wars Jedi: Survivor beating out God of War: Ragnarök, Hogwarts Legacy, Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, Respawn has some very tough competition to beat. Last year’s Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarök beat out Aliens: Fireteam Elite, Call of Duty: Vanguard, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, and Old World.
According to the Recording Academy, the award “recognizes excellence in soundtrack albums composed primarily of original music created specifically for, or as a companion to, a current video game or other interactive media released during the qualifying period.” In 2022, CEO Harvey Masjon Jr. said in a statement acknowledging the five new categories, including video game soundtracks, “We are thrilled to honor these diverse communities of music creators through the newly established awards and amendments, and to continue to foster an environment that inspires change, progress and collaboration. The Academy’s top priority is to effectively represent the music people we serve, and each year that means listening to our members and ensuring that our rules and policies reflect our ever-evolving industry.”
Congratulations to Respawn Entertainment; the studio’s game deserves it!
