TECH NEWS – MSI’s handheld PC is not very strong against the Asus ROG Ally, as the first benchmark results show.
MSI has attracted attention because it does not use AMD’s Ryzen Z1 APU, but Intel’s Meteor Lake. Although the device is not yet widely available internationally, several testers in China were able to get their hands on the MSI Claw. Note that the device will come in two versions. One will have the Intel Core Ultra 7 155H APU (unfortunately, this unusual naming scheme will be introduced for desktop PCs in time) and the other will have the Intel Core Ultra 5 135H.
The MSI Claw was tested in several situations, and the Asus ROG Ally was also used as a reference. Interesting results were obtained on the different power consumption (TDP) limits. The built-in benchmark for Shadow of the Tomb Raider showed an average gap of 10-15%, which is not in favor of MSI’s device. Cyberpunk 2077 and Red Dead Redemption 2 also show a similar advantage for the Asus ROG Ally, although this machine is more mature in terms of driver support and other resources, while the MSI Claw is not yet released. The technology gap may close later on, but the MSI will probably not be able to close it completely.
There is also a review that compares the two versions of the MSI Claw. The difference between the two Meteor Lake APUs lies in the pairing of CPU cores and the weaker Xe (graphics) cores, but the performance difference is much more noticeable. For games with higher system requirements, the difference can be well over 20%!
What can we learn from the first tests? Asus and AMD’s Ryzen Z1 pair delivers great performance (better than Steam Deck because it has older hardware!) and Intel will have a hard time catching up.
