Fans of the franchise have been demanding something for a long time, and Electronic Arts should finally hear those demands.
It’s been over 20 years since the franchise was launched, and its future may lie in DICE making a classic joke a reality. Battlefield 2042 failed to live up to expectations, and the new incarnation will carry a heavy burden. Battlefield could strengthen the current features as an option, but the other possibility is if DICE makes something out of an old joke, as it could also get the attention of veteran fans.
The Zombies mode appeared in Call of Duty many, many years ago. DICE responded by announcing, as a joke, that Battlefield would have a mode called Dino. It has since become a long running joke, and if DICE were serious, they could turn the joke into something tangible and playable. Sure, it sounds funny (especially considering how serious Battlefield can be), but it would still feel fresh. Call of Duty hasn’t given Battlefield much of a chance in years, but after Battlefield 2042, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III wasn’t much of a standout either.
Zombies are still popular in the Call of Duty IP these days, and could rival Battlefield if the dino mode were to actually happen. DICE could then find itself one step ahead of Activision Blizzard’s (=Microsoft’s) studios, but all it would take is for the team to embrace the absurdity. This would allow players to defuse the tension, and it could also be humorous, with serious soldiers taking up arms against reptiles that have been extinct for 65 years. (Jurassic Park crossover?)
Given that the Battlefield franchise (currently headed by Respawn founder Vince Zampella) hasn’t been in a strong position for years, maybe the IP really needs some kind of refresh. And Dino Mode could be the answer.
