Sony’s half-generation console update hasn’t even been announced yet, but the company is likely to unveil it soon.
We reported earlier today that AMD is working on a next-generation FSR, a version of FidelityFX Super Resolution that will follow industry trends so that they too will soon be able to offer AI-based upscaling technology after Nvidia and Intel. And we’re likely to see it in the PlayStation 5 Pro, as Microsoft and Sony’s consoles are also based on AMD processors and graphics chips.
AMD’s Chief Technology Officer Mark Papermaster appeared on the No Priors YouTube channel. The channel is dedicated to machine learning, technology and startups, and Papermaster’s appearance is justified because of AMD’s use of artificial intelligence. He explained that this year is going to be a big one for AMD, as they will be using AI upscaling in all of their devices, including their technology for gaming. This suggests that we’ll see products with this as early as this year. And what is rumored to be hitting stores towards the end of the year? The PlayStation 5 Pro!
The PlayStation 5 Pro’s AI upscaling will run on the GPU, the console’s graphics chip, as the APU (processor and graphics chip integrated on a single circuit), codenamed Viola, is rumored to lack an NPU (AI accelerator). If AMD is talking so openly about AI, the company has certainly worked with Sony to implement the technology.
None of this is official yet, as Sony hasn’t even said that a PlayStation 5 Pro is in the works, but last year we heard rumors for months that the company was planning a console that wouldn’t have a Blu-ray drive built in as standard, and that redesigned PS5 was released in the fall… so there’s certainly some truth to the rumors.
